Nothing is more terrifying than fire. I was driving home when I saw the flames, and a few ridges away was my house. I switched into crisis mode. A list of everything I have to save flashed through my head: my cats, my journals, cameras, computers, the treasures in my curio cabinet, my magnet collection. The threat of total destruction really makes you assess what you truly care about in life. What is replaceable? Are there any clothes I have to save? Not really. My book collection? Only the really old books. Yet with all of that, it’s funny how some things don’t change. As a child when my family had to evacuate from a different fire, I wanted to save my stuffed animals. Even now at twenty-seven, I wanted to do the same. I had all my bags ready, just in case.
What would you save?
